Altering the Number of Entries on a Category Page
I've already mentioned this one, but I thought I'd copy and paste the (very simple) change required to get this one to work. I may actually add a category to hold all of these hacks instead of just throwing them in the tools category.
Ok, so the problem is that by default, category pages hold the same number of entries as the main page. If you want only one entry on the main page, you're stuck with one entry on the category page.
I've modified the main blosxom file so that it only counts entries IF you're on a date-based page, or on an index page. Here's my change:
Hacking Blosxom for XHTML
I've been adding a few custom tweaks to Blosxom to get things working the way I like. I hate having fragments of HTML in my text files, so I've been working with some Wiki-style hacks. New lines are converted into either paragraphs, or line breaks as appropriate. And I have new lists working (and validating) as of today.
My hacks are as follows:
**
* Convert lists which are formatted as ** to start the list * for individual bullet points and ** to end the list.
* Convert triple new lines into paragraphs, and double new lines into line breaks.
The Problem With Categories
The reason why I've never had categories in the past is that my entries typically don't have a specific topic. They just are. I've now forced myself into categories, just for the fun of things. I've set myself up a few times to write an entry on the site and then realized one of two things: I had nothing to say that fit into one of my set categories; what I wanted to say actually belonged on one of my other sites.
So what haven't I written about?

backdirt.net
Laura is now officially blogging. I got an email two days ago that said (among other things):
This Hour Has 22 Reports?
So we're watching the intro to the Monday Report. And then suddenly we're watching This Hour Has 22 Minutes. But we haven't changed the channel. And then we're starting to get into This Hour Has 22 Minutes. But then, in the middle of the show, the right show comes on. That's right. Someone in master control put the wrong tape in the player. Whooops.
The Plan
I've had a few ideas about how I want the latest version of emmajane.net to work. Here's the latest plan of attack:
Zero Tolerance Anti-Spam Policy
Please note that owing to the large volume of mail arriving at this
desk, we may not be able to actually respond to your email or disclose
action taken againt the spammer. However, please be assured that we
have a zero tolerance anti-spam policy, and take a very dim view of spam
and net abuse involving an <Insert ISP's name> account.
Let me get this straight...if you have a zero tolerance anti-spam policy, does that mean you're actually in favour of spam? I've never been very good with the double negatives.
Converting to <a href="http://www.blosxom.com">Blosxom</a>
For the longest time I've been writing my own blogging tools and wandering around the 'net looking for something that made sense to me. I've always reverted to using a template and good ol' Save As to make new entries. There have never been any categories because I've never cared enough to add them...that's what new domain names are for, right? As far as archives go. I think I had those once. In like 1999. But they required work to maintain (or a CMS that was used for more than four consecutive entries). Neither the work part or the CMS part ever captured my interest for very long.
