User Groups

From Selena and Gab's most excellent talk on Running a Successful User Group to the Red Hat Society, I've been thinking a lot about groups and community lately. Mostly I think that I want more RHS members at (open source) user group meetings. I know that I invoked the image of the Red Hat Society on parade in my talk, but now I really want to pull that connection into the real world.
Do you have a Red Hat Society chapter in your town? What about the Raging Grannies? Are you a member of either group? I want to know what makes these groups so successful. I want to apply these lessons to the open source world. Can you help me make the initial connection? Do you have stories you can share from your experience with these groups?
I actually used to run a RHS chapter, but Ill tell you sometime what happened. I have been involved with a number of other groups that I think would be interesting to compare.
