Updated Links

Bruce Power has updated their letter to the Sierra Club to include a direct link to the report they are referencing. If you're reading along at home the Environmental Assessment Reports are available from the Bruce A Restart mini-site. The specific documents that are referenced are:

  • Screening Report, Part 1 (March 2006)
  • Presentation to Joint Council of Saugeen Ojibway Nations (April 2005)

To read the quote, "non-radioactive wastes will be reused or recycled to the degree possible" in context you need to download the March 2006 Screening Report on Environmental Assessment of the Bruce A Refurbishment for Life Extension and Continued Operations Project, Bruce A Nuclear Generating Station, Kincardine, Ontario. Preared by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Part 1. Click here to download the document (PDF format, 3.26M). A screen shot of the page has been uploaded to Flickr. Click the piccie to see the page.

Also on page 25 (and in the same box): "The steam generators will be sealed and transferred to the WWMF." It does not say, "via Sweden."

To see the quote "Bruce Power is committed to reducing, reusing and recycling wastes produced at the Bruce Power site to the extent possible." in context: download "Presentation to Joint Council of Saugeen Ojibway Nations." Click here to download the report (PDF format 2.8M). This report was prepared by Golder Associates. It does not appear to be part of the CNSC Screening Review/Environmental Assessment.

Click the picture to see the quote in context of the rest of the page. Also contained in that box is the statement, "however, much of the waste, and particularly low and intermediate level waste, containing radioactivity cannot be recycled for safety and environmental reasons. This waste is transferred to OPG's Western Waste Management Facility where it is processed to reduce its volume prior to being placed into storage." Note, again, there is nothing here that says, "via Sweden."

Thanks for the email, Megan, that was very helpful. ... now if I could just find that letter from the Sierra Club.
