Winning Math

Last week reporters looked at me with a sceptical eye when I told them the Green Party could win a seat in the next federal election. I didn't say it would be easy. But I do think it could be done.

Bruce-Grey Owen Sound has approximately 77,000 voters (2001 census data). In the last federal election incumbent, Larry Miller, won 23,000 votes. Dick Hibma (Green Party candidate) won 13,000 votes. Approximately 48,000 voters went to the polls and 29,000 did not. If each one of the 13,000 Green voters convinced two of their non-voting friends to vote Green in the next federal election we would have a landslide victory.

It won't be easy, but it can be done.

If you want to be a part of history the time to start talking to your friends isn't the day an election is called. The time is now. Do you have two or more friends who opted not to vote in the last federal election? Ask them why. Ask them what it would take to get them to the polls on the next go round. Be patient, but be persistent. Change isn't easy, but it does happen one person at a time.
